In industry and in communication: the NAS told about the prospects of technologies with artificial intelligence

The algorithm will still have its say

The world is inexorably moving in technological development. Artificial intelligence (AI) has moved from science fiction films to reality and already surpasses human capabilities in areas related to data processing. AI algorithms are capable of self-learning and can take on creative tasks. A number of developing countries are currently working on strategies for implementing AI in various sectors of the economy. Such solutions are expected to significantly increase labor productivity and product quality, help in training specialists, and take care of people's health. Sergei Kruglikov, Director General of the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, spoke about the stage of work on the implementation of AI technologies in our country, as well as about promising developments in this area that may appear in the near future.

Areas and opportunities

The first IT-Akademgrad exhibition and forum "Artificial Intelligence in Belarus" was recently held in Minsk. It brought together developments from the National Academy of Sciences, the ministries of education and industry, as well as private companies. Sergey Kruglikov especially noted that the event had been in preparation for several years:

— It became a kind of revision in the sphere of artificial intelligence in Belarus. The exhibition showed that the application of such technology in the country is really only happening in isolated places. At the same time, we have sufficient competencies even by world standards. We are able to master these technologies for most of our industries.

Among the promising areas where the introduction of AI would be most important for our country at this stage, Sergei Kruglikov named the industrial sector:

— AI elements, such as digital twins, have become an integral part of our lives. The manufacturing sector often uses them when designing its components, parts, mechanisms, and processes. All this leads to a reduction in defects. A digital twin allows for virtual testing of components, obtaining quality parameters, and expanding the range of manufactured products.
The most promising area for the implementation of AI is medicine. At the same time, Belarusian scientists have already achieved a lot in this area.

— In our country, we already have many information systems tied to healthcare. All these elements lack a digital assistant created on the basis of AI systems, which could quite effectively predict the course of diseases in patients, a set of drugs for treatment. Such assistants are ready to be introduced into healthcare and transfer it to the category of an intelligent system, — emphasized Sergey Kruglikov.

In addition, he drew attention to the fact that the set of equipment available in the country for conducting diagnostics already requires the presence of an intellectual component:

— Images obtained by CT and MRI diagnostics are very voluminous. In some cases, even the most competent specialist may get dazzled when working with them. Our systems, developed at the NAS, can detect neoplasms in images with a very high probability. And this will help to make more accurate diagnoses and prognoses of the course of diseases in the near future...
