Humanoid robots flash in the network more and more often. How such robots are created, whether artificial intelligence is involved and where such machines can be useful - we ask Tatiana Kim, a junior researcher at the laboratory of robotic systems of the IRP NAS of Belarus

Why did you decide to study robots?

It came from childhood. My children's toys were not dolls, but a drill, nails, solders, etc. d. Dad repaired household appliances, and I sat next to me and watched the process. And then she played with those tools while Dad was at work.

And my career with the lab began. I studied graduate school for three years, developed a control system for mobile robots. And I liked robotics so much that I decided to remain as a junior researcher in the laboratory and simultaneously write a dissertation. Now all the projects I do are connected either with hands or with the feet of anthropomorphic robots.

Robots have become my main area of activity. My supervisor said that every laboratory officer should have their favorite robot. And I found mine: it's the anthropomorphic Newman. It is about him and about the field of robotics in general I will tell at the nearest Science Festival.

How was this robot developed?

Newman’s feature concept was created by a French designer. We finalized the overall design of the robot, strengthened certain nodes and mechanisms. The individual elements most susceptible to damage have been replaced by aluminum.

We also developed the design of Newman’s legs. Now I am engaged in the calculation of the kinematic and dynamic model of leg movement for the effective and safe operation of the robot.

What is Newman’s main task?

This is an unlimited field for research. You can study individual parts of the robot’s body: for example, only the joints of the hands. Or take the head of a robot, equip it with depth cameras and apply computer vision to recognize objects. Or study the electronic “stuffing” of the robot. Newman is a field of experimentation for graduate students, undergraduates and students who come to our practice.

You might think about it during the holidays. But during working hours, the process of incoming tasks is so strongly delayed that there is no time left for imagination. When you are busy working, you think about it all the time, it is worth it. And the realization of fantasy is a story about free time.
