A new episode of the "Simply About Science" podcast: the history and future of the SKIF supercomputers

12.03.2026

The joint project of the UIIP of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Belarusian Radio "Kultura" channel continues to present complex scientific topics in simple and accessible language. In the new episode, experts introduce listeners to the secrets of the SKIF supercomputers—from their creation to their development prospects.

  • What are supercomputers and why are they needed?
  • How did the idea for the SKIF system arise, and what stages did it take to implement it?
  • What is the value of this technology within the framework of Union scientific programs?

Oleg Chizh, Head of the High-Performance Systems Laboratory at the UIIP of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and laureate of the 2025 Union State Prize, discussed this and much more.

"The very concept of the system emerged in the late 1990s, when an embargo was imposed on all CIS countries on the supply of computing equipment whose characteristics exceeded certain computing capacities. SKIF was the first attempt to solve not just the problems of hardware components, but a whole range of problems. And we successfully accomplished this," - notes the laboratory's head.

Furthermore, students will learn about plans for the further development of the system's hardware and software, as well as the training of specialists capable of operating these powerful computers.
