AI in Medicine: Prospects, Risks, and Challenges – Analysis by Scientists from the UIIP of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus

09.06.2026
The latest issue of the scientific and practical journal "Healthcare" (No. 3, 2026) features a large-scale analytical study on the implementation of artificial intelligence in medicine. The article, titled "Using Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Healthcare: Current Status, Risks, and Prospects" (pp. 68–80), provides a fundamental overview of global trends, technological solutions, and challenges facing digital medicine.

Authors of the study:

  • Olga Vladimirovna Krasko — Leading Researcher, Bioinformatics Laboratory, UIPI NAS of Belarus, PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor.
  • Sergey Vladimirovich Kruglikov — Chief Researcher, Department of Scientific and Methodological Support for Digital Development, UIPI NAS of Belarus, Doctor of Military Sciences, PhD in Engineering.
  • Igor Eduardovich Tom — Head of the Bioinformatics Laboratory, UIPI NAS of Belarus, PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor.
  • Mikhail Yuryevich Revtovich is Vice-Rector for Research at the Belarusian State Medical University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and Associate Professor.

The authors not only analyzed international experience, including cases from Russia, Europe, and the United States, but also developed an expert perspective on how AI technologies should develop in the Belarusian healthcare system. The article comprehensively examines the main areas of AI application and thoroughly analyzes the threats associated with its use. The publication emphasizes the need to create a clear regulatory framework in Belarus, mandatory certification of AI solutions as medical devices, and the integration of new systems with the national e-Health infrastructure. Particular attention is paid to the need to train medical personnel to work with new technologies.

As noted in the article, the global restructuring of the healthcare system to accommodate new technologies is driven by the need to process massive amounts of data (Big Data), personalized medicine, and the desire to improve diagnostic efficiency. Artificial intelligence is becoming more than just a fashionable trend, but a tool for solving real clinical problems: from early cancer detection to hospital optimization.

It's safe to say that the authors of this publication have presented a roadmap for the digital transformation of Belarusian healthcare, offering a balanced approach to implementing innovations that takes into account national specifics and patient safety.
