Science Without Borders: Chinese Scientists Visit Minsk

A delegation from the School of Fundamental Medical Sciences at Fudan University (Shanghai, People's Republic of China) has begun a working visit to the Unite Institute of Informatics Problems (JIIP) of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The meeting was organized as part of the implementation phase of the international scientific and technical project "Identification of New Potential Antimycobacterial Agents Using Virtual Screening and Biomedical Analysis."
The following arrived in the Belarusian capital to discuss cooperation:
- Liangdong Lyu, Professor at Fudan University;
- Yixin Wang, PhD student at Fudan University;
- Yantong Zheng, PhD student at Fudan University.
The UIIP NAS Belarus team was led by Alexander Vasilyevich Tuzikov, Head of the Laboratory of Mathematical Cybernetics, who is the project manager on the Belarusian side.
The project aims to address one of the most pressing global health challenges: the search for effective new potential therapeutic agents against mycobacteria, including the causative agent of tuberculosis, in the face of the spread of drug-resistant forms of the disease. The success of the research is based on the synergy of two powerful approaches: advanced computational technologies and fundamental experimental biology.
The work is being conducted in close tandem, with each party responsible for its own set of tasks:
- The Joint Institute for Informatics and Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is performing the full range of computer modeling: using virtual screening, molecular docking, and dynamics methods, scientists are conducting in-depth analysis and optimization of the structures of candidate compounds, identifying the most promising molecules;
- Fudan University has taken on the critical experimental component: a research team led by Professor Liandong Liu is conducting biomedical testing of the identified compounds, assessing their actual antimycobacterial activity, and investigating the mechanisms of drug action.
The participation of Chinese partners is essential for success, as experimental confirmation of activity allows us to move on to the next step—optimizing candidates and preparing materials for joint publications.
The current visit coincides with the completion of the second quarter of 2026 calendar plan, which is dedicated to discussing the results of joint research, agreeing on a list of the most promising compounds for further study, determining the direction of further experimental and computational work, synchronizing data, and developing a future strategy.
