Evidence-based medicine: can health be calculated?

08.07.2026

Medicine, in demand throughout time and era, is becoming more complex, evolving, and improving daily and hourly, but still maintains a single, fundamental goal: human health. Modern healthcare has long since shifted from physician intuition to precise calculations. The era of evidence-based medicine is unthinkable today without bioinformatics and mathematical modeling—tools that allow us to peer into the body at the molecular level and predict the progression of diseases years before the first symptoms appear, as well as calculate the likelihood of complications.

Olga Vladimirovna Krasko, a leading researcher at the Bioinformatics Laboratory at the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, spoke about how complex formulas translate into saved lives in the new episode of the "Simply About Science" podcast.

Mathematics as a tool for scientists has long ceased to be an abstract discipline and has become a tangible tool for physicians, allowing medicine to move from reacting to disease to proactively managing it.

"Simply About Science" is a joint project of the Joint Institute for Informatics and Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Belarusian Radio "Culture" channel. Here, we discuss complex and important topics in an accessible and understandable manner, and, most importantly, with expert advice.
