"Algorithm from Nature": How Belarus is training AI to manage public transport schedules

12.08.2026
Professor Mikhail Yakovlevich Kovalev, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Chief Researcher at the Mathematical Cybernetics Laboratory of the United Institute of Informatics Problems (UIIP) of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, outlined an important vector for the development of the urban environment on the First Information Channel. According to the scientist, the future of transport logistics lies in intelligent systems capable of adapting infrastructure operations in real time to the needs of the city and its residents.

Mikhail Yakovlevich emphasizes that classical scheduling methods have exhausted their usefulness. The urban environment is too dynamic – passenger flow is affected by weather, traffic congestion, mass events, and seasonality. It is becoming physically impossible for dispatchers to solve such problems manually.

The UIIP of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is developing so-called "nature's algorithms" for this purpose. These complex mathematical models make it possible to find optimal solutions to multidimensional problems with thousands of variables in minutes, whereas a human would need hours.

The use of neural networks provides direct economic benefits through route optimization and resource conservation. But the most valuable benefit of transport digitalization is the time saved.
