Students of BSUIR at the UIIP of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus: immersion in the world of science and technology
17.03.2026
First-year students at the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, who are just taking their first tentative steps in the field, visited the UIIP of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus to learn about the work of the country's leading scientific institute in the field of information technology.
Deputy Director General for Research Sergey Kasanin gave an introductory lecture in the conference hall and a tour of the institute's museum. He spoke about the rich history of the scientific institution, the main areas of work of the laboratories, and promising developments. The discussion was structured as a dialogue, and Sergey Kasanin also asked the students about their educational process and their readiness to dedicate themselves to the profession.
During the tour, the students saw the shared-use supercomputer center. The project's chief designer, Alexander Rymarchuk, spoke in detail about
SKIF technologies and the " UIIP-OFFICE" cluster supercomputer.
The students then visited the Republican Unitary Scientific and Engineering Enterprise
"Geoinformation Systems" of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. This enterprise is one of the main developers of the Belarusian Space System for Remote Sensing of the Earth and the national operator of this system. The first-year students learned how information received from spacecraft is processed and saw firsthand a model of the promising Belarusian-Russian ultra-high-resolution remote sensing satellite, scheduled for launch in 2028. On an interactive map, the students were able to track in real time the location of the Belarusian NASBSat-1 and NASBSat-2 satellites, which were launched in late December 2025.
The tour concluded with a
visit to the roof of the UIIP of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, where the ground-based remote sensing data reception equipment is installed. The students saw the 9-meter Belarusian-Russian high-information receiving complex designed to record target information from spacecraft.
Instead of the scheduled class hour, the students spent 2.5 hours at the UIIP of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, participating in a rich program that helped them better understand the workings of science and how it intertwines with various fields. Perhaps this excursion will help future IT specialists determine research areas for their coursework—and eventual theses—and their diploma theses. Perhaps some of the students will eventually join our institute as employees.
