How AI Brings Together Medical Professionals and Engineers from Belarus and China

16.09.2026
Scientists from the United Institute of Informatics Problems (UIIP) of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus are currently on a working visit to Wuhan University. Here—at the heart of China’s cutting-edge technological development—Vasily  Kovalev and Dmitry Karpenko, researchers from the Biomedical Image Analysis Laboratory, are working on the joint Chinese-Belarusian scientific project BRFFI F26KI-006: "Research and development of neural network models using heterogeneous data for federated learning, aimed at automating the diagnosis of mental disorders."

The mission of our experts is to teach AI to understand the human psyche. During the visit, the Belarusian scientists will collaborate with their Chinese counterparts to discuss research conducted on audio data from psychiatric patients, the analysis methods employed, and the integration of audio modalities with other data types within the models under development.

In addition to working group sessions, the visit program includes presentations by our experts. Representatives from the UIIP will also participate in events hosted by the China-Colombia Joint Laboratory on Large Multilingual Multimodal Models, where the adaptation of such systems to diverse languages and cultures will be discussed.

The visit is taking place at the invitation of Professor Mang Ye, Associate Dean of the School of Computer Science and Head of the Department of Intelligent Science at the university. The practical outcomes of the experts' stay in China will include finalizing the joint project's interim results, refining data requirements, outlining tasks for the next phase, and strengthening scientific and technical cooperation between the UIIP and leading global centers of expertise.
