Algorithm at the tip of a needle: how IT technologies can help practicing surgeons

18.08.2026

Surgery has always been a territory of absolute responsibility, where the cost of an error is measured in nanometers. Working with great vessels, preparing for transplantation or removing a tumor near vital arteries is an area of the highest risk, requiring the doctor to have the steadfastness of a jeweler's hand and the intuition of a sapper. However, today the once classic “saw - operated” is giving way to the new paradigm “calculate – model – operate”.

A meeting took place at the Joint Institute for Scientific Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, uniting two worlds that existed in parallel a decade ago: the creators of the most complex computational algorithms and those in whose hands human lives are held. At the same table were representatives of the laboratory of high-performance systems and modeling technologies and leading doctors of the Minsk Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantology and Hematology, as well as the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology named after. N.N. Alexandrova.

The parties discussed the prospects for large-scale cooperation. The scientific and technical direction was represented by the chief researcher of the Laboratory of High-Performance Systems and Modeling Technologies of the Institute of Industrial Technologies of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Sergei Viktorovich Medvedev. From the medical community the meeting was attended by:

  • Ivan Pikirenya, surgeon, candidate of medical sciences (MSPC of surgery, transplantology and hematology);
  • Andrey Chisty, head of the department of “Tissue biotransplants” of the International Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantology and Hematology;
  • Nikolay Dobrovolsky, cardiac surgeon at the Moscow Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantology and Hematology;
  • Antonina Medvedeva, oncologist, Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology named after. N.N. Alexandrova.
According to Professor Sergei Medvedev, the main value of such interdisciplinary collaborations lies in the ability, through modern technologies, to help the doctor choose the only correct tactical plan for real operational work. This is critical in emergency and elective surgery. “And again, our institute volunteered to be a pioneer in this direction, this is both good and extremely responsible,” - shared Sergei Viktorovich.

The signing of agreements is still in the future. The meeting participants outlined specific steps to integrate the capabilities of the Institute of Pedagogical Research of the National Academy of Sciences into the clinical practice of the country's leading centers. This is how seemingly incompatible worlds are woven together. The cold mathematics of supercomputers serves the warmest purpose - the preservation of human life, turning even the most unpredictable operation into a technological process verified to the micron. And while patients see only the shine of a scalpel, the outcome of many interventions is already being decided in the silence of the laboratories of Belarusian scientists.
